Rail line inquiry head urges public comment after $25k payment to senior union official
Updated
Labor MPs are calling for an urgent inquiry into the payments to members of the Australian Construction Trades Council (ACTU) by the ACTU to senior union officials.
Key points: ACT to receive $25k from Turnbull government's controversial Trans-Tasman rail project
State Opposition says union was involved in pay row
ACTU says union was concerned about cuts to union
The payment of nearly $23 million by the union to former assistant parliamentary secretary Anthony Farrara was revealed this week.
Under ACTU rules, employees in unionised roles are barred from receiving any pay on top of their salary.
But the payment to Mr Farrara was revealed last week, and Labor has said it has contacted Attorney-General George Brandis to inquire into the circumstances around the payment.
Earlier this month, the Turnbull government revealed it would spend $25 million funding the new rail line from Darwin to Hobart via a $400 million bridge to be built across the Nullarbor.
The union has now accused the department of being at the "front lines" of the project, which has been controversial since its inception.
Speaking this morning, Liberal MP Matt Thistlethwaite said the deal showed the importance of the unions to the project.
"While the ACTU had no hand in the decision-making process about this project, we can also assure them that we are willing to work with them to build the Trans-Tasman project that will give the country a reliable and affordable railway," he said.
He added the union had been "totally involved" in the project's early stages, and had "played a vital role in ensuring the project passed regulatory and performance audits".
"I am grateful to everyone that has shown their support, and we look forward to continuing this relationship with our former deputy and other union officials as part of the process," he said.
Last month, the federal government agreed to provide a $10 million grant for the project, which will see a six-stop rail link through Darwin and Hobart.
On Monday, Mr Farrara revealed he would leave the ACTU to work for the new government.
He claimed he was sacked last year because his union had threatened him and other union workers with redundancies.
"The ACTU are saying they have made $75 million and they want to make sure that I don't go," he said.
"They said there could be a lot of work I would find myself doing, so I am taking them up on that.
"But then, you can be the one who does that

Gillard tours bundaberg bushland, with the hope of raising funds for the Greater Brisbane flood relief efforts, is due to visit Lough Bun Creek on Monday.
A flood warning has been placed for the north central west and south east.
It has been declared flood-affected for at least 13 per cent of Queensland's landmass including coastal areas along the Great Barrier Reef.
More than 30,000 houses, buildings and motorbikes have been declared uninhabitable in the flood-affected area.
Gillard says the government will work with federal and state and local agencies and emergency management agencies to ensure all assistance goes straight to those most in need.
She has also confirmed a State Emergency Services spokeswoman is on standby in the flood affected areas.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk also praised the state's emergency services.
"We are working to provide immediate assistance to those affected by the state's flood," she said.
"I also want to thank the communities and businesses across the Queensland Country for their ongoing support of what is an unprecedented flood."
Gillard visited a community centre in Bundaberg and called on those who need housing to look beyond the temporary accommodation available.
"As we all know, Bundaberg is going through one of the worst storms in recent history with thousands of homes in flood water," Gillard said.
"We need your help to help rebuild and rebuild, not only to live in a home but to give back to your community.
"So here are some of the things the people in Bundaberg are asking us for: housing, money for people to move into, money for food for those that have been displaced from their homes. We hope you will provide these."
Gillard toured a community centre to discuss the disaster with residents in the Bundaberg community centre.
Fifty people have been displaced by the flooding.
The state government is making a $1.5 million contribution toward a flood protection project at Bundaberg.
More than $3 million was raised by the Government of Queensland for the flood relief and recovery efforts in t
