Scottish Basketball Championship Senior Men Division 1

Austrian Adam Hammerschmidt led undefeated League leaders Sony Centre Fury to a big 16 point win over current Champions Boroughmuir Blaze at the Crags and took a further step towards reclaiming the title they held for 3 consecutives seasons. In a tight opening quarter that saw both teams fall short on offence, the Falkirk side took a 12-10 lead into the second stanza. Captain Keith Bunyan with 11 personal in that second was key in Fury’s 35-27 half-time lead. The third saw Fury increase their lead to 12 on the back of four threes from Bunyan, Hammerschmidt and Lithuanian Eddy Leginus (2). Fury’s three point barrage and aggressive play had Blaze reeling with the gap reaching 17 at one stage. The final period saw Fury control the game as they moved to a comfortable 16 point win and an increased hold on this season’s Championship.
For the game’s top scorer Hammerschmidt it was a tale of two halves as he recovered from a poor first half to lead Fury with 15 personal in the second half.
Bunyan and Leginus shared 28 points with ever improving young centre Ross Gibson grabbing 16 points.
Fury Headcoach John Bunyan told Heraldsport
“ This was a great team performance – we overcame a poor start on the offensive end in the first period and then put together three 20 plus second/third and fourth periods. A lot has been made of Blaze’s scoring ability and to hold them to 61 points speaks volumes of our defensive performance.
Bryan and Eddy were key to our control of the game with the experience of Greg, Keith and Walter also a big factor in the game. Our younger players continue to deliver from Ross in the starting line-up to Daniel and Connor coming off the bench. We maintained our double digit winning record this season despite some very poor execution from the line, but our intensity and teamwork more than made up for that shortfall. To have taken three of our key rivals out with big wins on the road will give us a big advantage in the second half-of the season.”
